How did it all start?

Suunto was founded by an eager outdoor person, Tuomas Vohlonen, over 80 years ago. For many years Vohlonen had been disturbed by the inaccuracy of traditional compasses and the instability of the compass needle. As a wise engineer, he developed a compass filled with liquid for mass production. Since 1936 Suunto started to develop extra accurate compasses offering more accurate reading and steadier needles. The compasses of Suunto were accurate and of firm stature. During the Finnish Winter War, the Finnish lieutenant Norrback was saved from a Russian sniper’s bullet because he had an M311 field compass in his pocket. Since this save accuracy has been a trademark of Suunto. In the 1950s and 1960s, the product range was expanded as the company started to produce compasses that fit for orienteering, sailing, and diving. At that time the company was already quite successful and its compasses were delivered to over 50 countries all over the world. The development and success of Suunto continued in the 1980s when the company became the world’s leading manufacturer of diving equipment. Suunto launched Suunto SME-ML diving gear that completely revolutionized the industry replacing the old calculations on diving boards. In 1997 Suunto launched its first watch-sized diving device, and ever since the company has been providing people with great features packed in small-sized devices. The watches of Suunto combined a top-grade performance of diving gear with a high-class diving watch that was further developed for everyday use. The development of the product portfolio continued in the 21st century when Suunto began launching highly technological sports watches for hobby, professional, and everyday athletes. As the world and services moved increasingly online the company launched an online sports diary Movescount for practice tracking, the first watch model that supported a mobile connection, and the mobile app Suunto Movescount in the 22nd century. Today Suunto still works from Finland where most of their products are designed and hand-made.
